1. Unlock the Chain (Melepas Rantai), the Great Escape: Indonesian Style!

Get ready to channel your inner Houdini with “melepas rantai,” the Indonesian game that’s all about breaking free and outsmarting your opponents. If you’re looking for a fun and exciting way to get a large group of friends moving and laughing, look no further than “melepas rantai,” the Indonesian game that’s like a relay race with a twist. In this game of speed, agility, and a little bit of contortion, players race against the clock to see who can navigate their way through a human chain the fastest.

The Basics:

  • Divide your large group into two teams
  • Each team forms a human chain by holding hands in a line
  • One player from each team stands at the start of their team’s line, ready to begin the race
  • On “go,” the players race to weave their way through the linked hands of their teammates, trying to reach the end of the line as quickly as possible
  • Once a player reaches the end of their team’s line, the next player in line starts their run
  • The first team to have all their players successfully navigate the chain wins!

“Melepas rantai” is a game that requires speed, flexibility, and a willingness to get up close and personal with your teammates. As players race through the linked hands, they’ll need to duck, twist, and contort their bodies to avoid getting stuck or breaking the chain.

So gather your large group of friends, form your teams, and get ready to unleash your inner speed demon. With “melepas rantai,” you’ll be racing, laughing, and maybe even getting a little tangled up – but that’s all part of the fun of this classic Indonesian childhood game!

2. Red Rover, Red Rover, Send Your Strength Right Over!

Get ready to link up, call out, and break through in Red Rover, the classic game of strength and strategy! Two teams line up facing each other, taking turns calling players from the opposite side to run across and attempt to break their human chain.

The Basics:

  • Line up two teams facing each other, no more than 10 meters apart
  • One team calls out a player from the other side to run across and attempt to break their chain
  • If the runner breaks through, they can take a player back to their team; if not, they join the other team
  • The game ends when one team has captured all the players or when the kids decide to call it quits

Red Rover’s origins are up for debate, with theories ranging from British roots (possibly referring to Viking invaders) to American connections (an 1828 steamboat or James Fenimore Cooper’s 1855 book). Regardless of its beginnings, this game has been challenging kids to work together and test their strength for generations.

3. Tinker, Tailor, Money Maker!

Get ready to tap, sing, and race your way to rhythmic mastery with this clever spin on “Duck, Duck, Goose”! Inspired by the nursery rhyme “Tinker, Tailor,” this game is the brainchild of a creative K-5 music teacher who wanted to make learning about quarter rests an unforgettable experience.

The Basics:

  • Have students sit in a circle, each with a “money sack” (a small bag or pouch)
  • The “Tapper” walks around the circle, gently tapping each student’s head in time with the song
  • When the Tapper reaches the quarter rest at the end of the song, they stop on a student’s head and race around the circle
  • The chosen student must quickly grab as many beanbags (“stolen money”) as possible and put them in their money sack before the Tapper returns to their spot

Not only is this game a total blast, but it also drives home the concept that a quarter rest gets one whole beat. By making the Tapper land on the sneaky “thief” during the rest, students internalise the duration of the pause in a fun and engaging way.

Whether you use the original lyrics or adapt them to fit a beloved storybook (like this teacher’s “Rub a Dub Dub” version), “Tinker, Tailor, Money Maker” is sure to become a classroom favourite.

4. The Moccasin Game: A Native American Tradition That’s Hiding in Plain Sight!

Get ready to dive into the world of the moccasin game, a traditional Native American pastime that’s equal parts strategy, deception, and good old-fashioned fun. This game was once so popular that players needed to seek permission from village elders before they could even begin!

The Basics:

  • Two teams, the finders and the keepers, face off in a battle of wits
  • Each team has a singer who acts as a cheerleader, encouraging their own team while playfully taunting the opposition
  • The keeper hides a pebble in one of four moccasins, moving their hands rapidly to conceal the pebble’s location, even after it’s been dropped
  • The finder must carefully turn over each moccasin until they uncover the hidden pebble
  • A complex scoring system keeps players on their toes, with games often lasting for hours

But the moccasin game is more than just a simple guessing game – it’s a lively, noisy affair that engages players on multiple levels. The singers’ chants and jeers fill the air, while the keeper’s lightning-fast hand movements keep everyone guessing. And when the finder finally uncovers the pebble? The excitement is palpable!

This traditional game may have faded from popularity over time, but it has never lost its magic. In recent years, younger generations have rediscovered the joys of the moccasin game, with tournaments popping up at powwows and gatherings across North America.

5. Chinese Garter: Jump, Twist, and Stretch Your Way to Victory!

The Philippines is clearly a nation that knows how to have a good time, and Chinese Garter is yet another example of their playful spirit. Don’t let the name fool you – this game is 100% Filipino fun!

The Basics:

  • Two teams of two or more players each gather around a stretchable garter, rope, or rubber band
  • Two facilitators hold the garter horizontally, facing each other at opposite ends
  • Players take turns jumping or crossing over the garter without touching it or letting their knees hit the ground
  • The garter starts at ankle level and moves up with each successful jump, all the way to over the head
  • If a player touches the garter or fails to jump, they’re out! The offending player becomes the new game post, and the level restarts
  • The last player standing (or jumping) wins the game

Chinese Garter is a true test of agility, stamina, and jumping prowess. As the garter rises higher and higher, players must get creative with their jumps, twists, and contortions to make it over without getting eliminated.

So the next time you’re looking for a fun and challenging game to play with friends, give Chinese Garter a try.

6. Ghosts in the Graveyard

Who You Gonna Call? Your Friends, for a Spooky Game of Hide-and-Shriek! Get ready for a hair-raising good time with Ghosts in the Graveyard, the classic game that’s been sending shivers down players’ spines for generations. Whether you’re playing outside among the tombstones or inside with the lights off, this game is guaranteed to deliver thrills and chills.

The Basics:

  • Choose a playing area with plenty of hiding spots and a designated “safe zone” where players can run when the ghost is spotted
  • Select one player to be the ghost (you can use any method you like, from volunteering to a good old-fashioned round of “Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum”)
  • While the ghost runs off to hide, the other players count together: “One o’clock, two o’clock, three o’clock…” all the way up to “Midnight! I hope I don’t see the ghost tonight!”
  • Players then leave the safe zone and begin searching for the ghost
  • If a player spots the ghost, they yell “Ghost in the graveyard!” and everyone races back to the safe zone
  • If the ghost manages to tag a player, that player becomes the new ghost for the next round
  • If the ghost doesn’t catch anyone, the last player to reach the safe zone becomes the new ghost

There are quite a few versions of this spine-tingling game, so be sure to check out WikiHow for the full rules to this traditional version and other variations. No matter which version you choose, Ghosts in the Graveyard is sure to provide hours of spooky fun for players of all ages.

7. Yut Nori The Korean Board Game That’s Throwing Shade at “Squid Game”

Move over, ddakji and gong-gi – there’s another traditional Korean game that deserves the spotlight! Yut Nori, the ancient board game that’s all about strategy, luck, and a whole lot of stick-throwing fun, is ready to steal the show.

The Basics:

  • Players take turns throwing four sticks onto the board, which have a flat side and a rounded side with pictures
  • The number of spaces a player can move depends on how the sticks land:
    • Do: One stick flat side up, move one space
    • Gae: Two sticks flat side up, move two spaces
    • Geol: Three sticks flat side up, move three spaces
    • Yut: All four sticks flat side up, move four spaces
    • Mo: All sticks flat side down, move five spaces
  • Landing on an opponent’s piece sends it back to the start and earns the player an extra turn
  • Landing on your own piece allows you to stack them and move as one
  • Take shortcuts by landing on the big circles in the center or corners of the board
  • The first player to get all their pieces back to the start wins
  • If all coin tosses are heads or tails, the player gets an extra turn
  • Players can join up to two pieces into a single set – if an opponent lands on a set, all pieces in the set return to the start

Yut Nori may not have made it into the “Squid Game” lineup, but that doesn’t make it any less thrilling. With its blend of chance and choice, this game keeps players on their toes as they navigate the board, trying to outsmart and out manoeuvre their opponents.

8. Simon Says, the Playground Game That’s All About Following Orders (Or Not!)

Get ready to test your listening skills with Simon Says, the classic playground game that’s been torturing kids (and adults!) for years. In this game of commands and quick reflexes, one player is Simon and gives the rest of the group commands. But there’s a catch – you only follow the command if Simon says “Simon says” first!

The Rules:

  1. Choose one player to be Simon, who will face the rest of the players
  2. Simon gives commands to the group, either by saying “Simon says” before the command or just the command alone
  3. If Simon says “Simon says” before the command, players must follow
  4. If Simon gives a command without saying “Simon says”, players must not follow
  5. Players who follow or don’t follow a command incorrectly are out and must sit out until next round
  6. Last player standing wins and becomes the new Simon for next round

Simon Says is a fantastic way to help kids practice their listening, focus and think on their feet. And with the ability to customise the commands and even change Simon’s name to a theme (like “Birthday Girl says” or “Santa says”) the fun is endless!

9. Da Cau: The Vietnamese Foot Badminton Game That’s Kicking Boredom to the Curb!

Looking for a childhood game that’s equal parts challenging, unique, and downright addictive? Say hello to Da Cau, the Vietnamese school yard favourite that’s taking the world by storm, one flying shuttlecock at a time!

The Rules:

  • Grab a shuttlecock and some friends
  • Use your feet, knees, head, chest, or shoulders to keep that shuttlecock soaring
  • No hands allowed! (Unless you want to be the one buying the next round of banh mi sandwiches)
  • Drop the shuttlecock and the point goes to the other team (cue dramatic slow-mo replays)
  • First team to lose all their points buys the victory pho!

Whether you’re playing in the school yard, the park, or even in a professional badminton court (for you fancy folks), Da Cau is the perfect way to shake up your usual childhood games routine. And with the option for freestyle moves and tricks, you can show off your fancy footwork while keeping that shuttlecock in play.

10. Hot Potato: The Sizzling Party Game That’s Catching Fire!

Get ready to toss, pass and hope you’re not holding the spud when the music stops! Hot Potato is the ultimate party game that’s been burning up parties for years.

How to Play:

  1. Grab a beanbag, a ball or even a real potato (if you’re feeling extra fancy)
  2. Split your group into two circles, players standing arm’s length apart
  3. Turn up the tunes and start tossing the “potato” around the circle
  4. Each successful catch means everyone takes a step back, making the circle bigger and the game harder
  5. When the music stops the player holding the “potato” is out (but not before doing a dramatic “hot potato” dance of course)
  6. The team with the biggest circle after a set time wins!

But Hot Potato isn’t just a fun party game – it’s also a sneaky way to improve reflexes, reaction times and hand-eye coordination. So while you’re laughing and lunging for the “potato” you’re actually getting better (just don’t tell the kids that).

11. Topfschlagen: The German Birthday Game That’s a Smashing Good Time!

Get ready to unleash your inner detective and put your pot-finding skills to the test with Topfschlagen, the traditional German game that’s been a birthday party staple for generations. Also known as “hit the pot,” this game is all about using your senses (well, except for sight) to locate a hidden pot filled with tasty treats.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Someone hides an upside-down pot with a small treat inside, like a piece of chocolate or candy
  2. The birthday kid (or a willing victim) is blindfolded and given a stick or wooden spoon
  3. The other players spin the blindfolded player around until they’re slightly dizzy and disoriented
  4. The blindfolded player then crawls around on the floor, tapping their stick to find the elusive pot
  5. The other players can help by shouting “hot” or “cold” to guide the seeker in the right direction
  6. When the player finally finds the pot, they remove the blindfold and claim their hard-earned treat!

Topfschlagen may sound simple, but it’s a game that requires a keen sense of hearing, a good memory, and a willingness to look a little silly in front of your friends. But that’s all part of the fun! Watching the blindfolded player crawl around, tapping their stick and trying to make sense of the “hot” and “cold” clues, is guaranteed to have everyone in stitches.

12. What’s the Time, Mr. Wolf?

The Playground Classic That’s Making Learning to Tell Time a Howling Good Time! Remember those carefree days on the playground, when all you needed was a few friends and a game to make the hours fly by? Well, get ready to turn back the clock (pun intended) with “What’s the Time, Mr. Wolf?” – the classic game that’s been helping small children practice counting and telling time since before smartphones were a twinkle in Steve Jobs’ eye!

How to Play:

  1. Choose one player to be the big bad wolf (but let’s face it, they’re probably more of a puppy at heart)
  2. The rest of the players line up at the opposite end of the playground, ready to put their time-telling skills to the test
  3. The players shout, “What’s the time, Mr. Wolf?” and the wolf responds with a time (e.g., “It’s 3 o’clock!”)
  4. The players count out loud and take that number of steps toward the wolf (because apparently, wolves use clocks now)
  5. The wolf turns around after the players have taken their steps and are standing still (probably contemplating their life choices)
  6. When the wolf decides it’s chow time, they shout “It’s dinner time!” and chase the players back to the start (cue the squeals of laughter and terror)

If you really want to up the ante, try playing on a hopscotch court – because nothing says “learning to tell time” like hopping on one foot while a pretend wolf chases you.

13. Agawan Base: The Filipino Tag Game That’s Capturing Hearts and Bases!

Get ready to run, dodge, and strategize your way to victory with Agawan Base, the traditional Filipino game that’s like a high-stakes version of capture the flag!

The Basics:

  • Two teams, two bases, and one ultimate goal: capture the enemy’s base without getting tagged!
  • Players become the “prey” when they step out of their base, so watch your step (literally)
  • Tag an opponent to send them to your base’s “jail,” where they’ll stay until a brave teammate frees them
  • Be the first team to capture the other’s base, and you’ll be crowned the Agawan Base champions!

But don’t let the simple rules fool you – Agawan Base is a game that requires speed, agility, and some serious strategic thinking. Will you be the one to lure your opponents out of their base, only to swiftly capture it while they’re chasing you? Or will you play it safe and focus on freeing your teammates from the enemy’s clutches?

Whatever your strategy, one thing’s for sure: Agawan Base is a game that’ll have you running, laughing, and maybe even doing a victory dance (if you’re lucky enough to capture that base!).

14. Double Dutch, the Jump Rope Game That’s Skipping and Hopping Its Way to Playground Fame!

Ready to take your jump rope skills to the next level? Then it’s time to dive into the world of Double Dutch, the game that’s been turning playgrounds into stages and jumpers into stars since before TikTok was a twinkle in ByteDance’s eye!

The Basics:

  • Grab two ropes, two turners, and a jumper (or two, if you’re feeling extra spicy)
  • Turners, start swinging those ropes in opposite directions like you’re stirring a giant cauldron of awesome sauce
  • Jumpers, wait for the perfect moment (when the back rope passes your face) and leap into the center like a majestic gazelle
  • Skip, hop, and bounce your way to jump rope glory, all while avoiding getting tangled up like a pair of headphones in your pocket
  • When you’re done showing off your moves, gracefully exit near a turner and take their place, because sharing is caring (and also because your calves are probably on fire)

As the game goes on, the jumps get trickier, the ropes get faster, and the stakes get higher. Will you be the one to execute a flawless double-under, or will you get caught by the dreaded rope snake?

Whether you’re a seasoned jumper or a newbie looking to up your recess game, Double Dutch is the perfect way to show off your coordination, rhythm, and overall awesomeness. Plus, it’s a killer cardio workout (but don’t tell the kids that – they’ll think it’s just a game).

15. Pétanque, The French Ball Game That’s Rolling Its Way into Everyone’s Hearts!

Picture this: you’re at a summer barbecue with a large group of friends, the sun is shining, and you’re looking for a game that’s easy to learn but still packs a competitive punch. Enter pétanque, the French cousin of bocce ball that’s been delighting players from Paris to Phuket!

The Basics:

  • Grab some hollow metal balls (called boules) and a small wooden target ball (the jack)
  • Find a patch of dirt, gravel, or grass and draw a circle about 50 cm in diameter
  • Flip a coin to see who goes first, then have that team toss the jack 6-10 meters away
  • Players take turns throwing their boules from inside the circle, aiming to get as close to the jack as possible
  • The team with the closest boule scores points equal to the number of boules they have closer than their opponent’s best shot
  • Keep playing until one team reaches 13 points, or until the pastis runs out (whichever comes first)

But don’t let the simple rules fool you – pétanque is a game of strategy, skill, and a little bit of luck. Will you go for the risky shot and try to knock your opponent’s boule out of contention, or play it safe and nestle yours up close to the jack? Will you throw with a gentle lob or a powerful underarm toss? The choices are yours, but choose wisely – your team’s honour is at stake!

So grab your boules, find a patch of terra firma, and get ready to engage in some friendly (or not-so-friendly) competition. Who knows – you might just discover your inner French sports hero and a new favourite among your go-to childhood games!

17. How Low Can You Go? Find Out with Limbo, the Ultimate Party Game!

Get ready to bend, shimmy, and shake your way to victory with Limbo, the game that’s been a staple of childhood parties and tropical getaways for decades. In this game of flexibility and finesse, players take turns passing under a horizontal stick, testing their ability to go lower and lower without losing their balance or touching the ground.

The Basics:

  • Two players hold the limbo stick horizontally at shoulder height
  • Players line up and take turns dancing or shimmying their way under the stick without touching it or the ground
  • After each round, the stick is lowered slightly, raising the stakes and the challenge
  • The last player standing (or bending) wins!

But don’t be fooled by the laid-back vibe – Limbo is a game that requires skill, concentration, and a willingness to push your body to its limits. As the stick gets lower and lower, players must bend backwards, keeping their head and neck straight, and avoid touching anything that could help them stay upright.

Limbo’s origins can be traced back to the sunny shores of Trinidad & Tobago in the 1950s, but its popularity has since spread to parties and gatherings around the world. So whether you’re on a beach vacation or just looking to add some tropical flair to your next get-together, Limbo is the perfect game to get everyone moving, grooving, and having a blast.

18. Cat and Mouse: The Parachute Game That’ll Make You Wish Every Day Was PE Day!

Remember the rush of excitement when your teacher pulled out that colourful parachute during PE class? You just knew it was going to be a good day. Well, get ready to relive those nostalgic childhood memories with Cat and Mouse, the ultimate parachute game that’ll have you laughing, strategizing, and maybe even breaking a little sweat.

The Basics:

  1. Gather your crew and sit in a circle around the parachute, holding onto the edges (or handles, if you’re fancy like that)
  2. Choose a brave soul to be the mouse and have them crawl under the parachute (no pressure, but everyone’s counting on you)
  3. Pick a stealthy cat to crawl on top of the parachute (shoes off, claws out)
  4. On the count of “shake,” everyone starts creating waves to hide the mouse (teamwork makes the dream work, people)
  5. When the leader says “mouse,” the furry little critter starts scurrying around underneath, trying to evade capture
  6. Once the mouse is hidden, the leader says “cat,” and the feline hunter begins their search, gently tagging the mouse when they find them
  7. After the epic showdown, everyone returns to their spots, and the game starts anew with a fresh cat and mouse

But the real magic of Cat and Mouse lies in the teamwork and problem-solving skills it fosters. Will you help the cat with hints and tips, or will you side with the underdog (undermouse?) and lead the hunter astray? The choice is yours, but one thing’s for sure – you’ll be having a blast either way.

And when the game’s over, take a moment to reflect on the experience. Was it harder being the cat or the mouse? How could your fellow players have helped (or hindered) your efforts? These questions aren’t just fun to discuss – they’re also a great way to develop those all-important life skills like communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.

19. Patintero: The Filipino Childhood Game That’s Taking the World by Storm!

Get ready to channel your inner speed demon and unleash your tagging prowess with Patintero, the traditional Filipino game that’s been a staple of childhood playtime for generations. In this game of quick reflexes and strategic thinking, two teams face off in a battle of wits and agility, with one team trying to cross a rectangular play area while the other team attempts to tag them out.

The Basics:

  • Divide your group into two teams of two to six players each
  • Decide who will be the taggers and who will be the runners (rock-paper-scissors or a coin toss work great for this)
  • The taggers take their positions on the lines of the rectangle, ready to defend their territory
  • The runners line up on one side, preparing to make a mad dash across the play area
  • On “go,” the runners attempt to cross to the other side without getting tagged by the defenders
  • If a runner gets tagged, they’re out (or maybe they join the tagging team, depending on your rules)
  • The first team to successfully cross all the lines without getting tagged wins!

But don’t be fooled by the simple premise – Patintero is a game that requires lightning-fast reflexes, clever feints, and maybe even a bit of trash talk (all in good fun, of course). Runners need to think on their feet, dodging and weaving to avoid the outstretched hands of the taggers. Meanwhile, the tagging team must work together to cover all the angles and prevent any sneaky runners from slipping through their defenses.

So gather your friends, find a patch of open space (a playground, park, or even your backyard will do), and get ready to experience the thrill of Patintero. With no equipment needed and endless variations to keep things fresh, this game is perfect for kids (and kids-at-heart) of all ages.

20. Wheelbarrow Races: The Ultimate Test of Teamwork and Hilarity!

Get ready to laugh until your abs hurt with wheelbarrow races, the classic game that’s been a staple of school field days and backyard barbecues for generations. Teams of two race against each other, with one person walking on their hands and the other steering them like a human wheelbarrow!

The Basics:

  • Find a partner and decide who will be the “driver” and who will be the “wheelbarrow”
  • The driver grabs the wheelbarrow’s ankles, while the wheelbarrow walks forward on their hands
  • The first team to cross the finish line without losing control wins bragging rights and grass stains

Wheelbarrow races are a serious test of teamwork, trust, and upper body strength. But don’t worry, it’s not just for kids – some adults take this game very seriously. In fact, there’s even an annual Wheelbarrow Olympics in Hungary! So if you’ve been secretly training for years in your backyard, now’s your chance to shine on the international stage and bring home the gold (or at least a really impressive grass stain). Just don’t forget to stretch before you race – you don’t want to pull a wheelbarrow hamstring!

21. Musical Statues: Get ready to dance like nobody’s watching, then freeze like everyone is!

Get ready to bust a move and strike a pose with musical statues, the ultimate party game that’s been getting people grooving and freezing for generations. In this game of dancing, quick reflexes, and serious self-control, players must strut their stuff when the music plays and freeze like a statue when it stops. Think you’ve got what it takes to be the last one standing (or posing)? Then it’s time to hit the dance floor!

The Basics:

  • Crank up the tunes and let everyone show off their best moves
  • When the music stops, players must freeze in a pose and hold it until the music starts again
  • If you move, giggle, or wobble, you’re out – no ifs, ands, or booties about it!
  • The last player left striking a pose when the music stops for the final time is crowned the musical statue champion

To keep things fresh and funky, try these groovy variations:

  • Give players specific poses to strike, like “ballerina,” “superhero,” or “pretzel”
  • Have players form groups and create themed statues together, like a zoo or a rock band
  • Slow down the music to really test their statue skills (and maybe sneak in a nap)

Not only is musical statues a ton of fun, but it’s also great for helping kids develop their creativity, social skills, and body control. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to break out those dance moves you’ve been saving for a special occasion (like a Tuesday afternoon).

22. Corre, Corre la Guaraca: Duck, Duck, Goose’s Sneaky Spanish Cousin!

If you thought Duck, Duck, Goose was the ultimate test of your reflexes and cunning, get ready to meet its mischievous Spanish relative: Corre, Corre la Guaraca! This game takes the classic formula of tapping heads and chasing friends to a whole new level of sensory deception and sly strategy.

The Basics:

  • Players sit in a circle, singing “Corre, Corre, la Guaraca who looks back will be bopped on his head!” (don’t worry, no actual bopping required)
  • A runner jogs around the outside of the circle, handkerchief in hand, ready to strike
  • The runner’s mission? To stealthily drop the handkerchief on a seated player’s back without being noticed
  • If the runner makes it around the circle undetected, the unsuspecting victim is out
  • But if the seated player feels the handkerchief, they must spring into action and tag the runner before they escape
  • If the runner is tagged, they’re out; if not, the game continues with a new runner

Think of Corre, Corre la Guaraca as Duck, Duck, Goose leveled up – with an added layer of sensory awareness and sneakiness that’ll keep you on your toes (and your back). Will you be the master of the subtle handkerchief drop, or will your lightning-fast reflexes save you from elimination?

So gather your friends, brush up on your Spanish singing skills (or just make up your own silly lyrics), and get ready to experience the heart-pounding thrill of Corre, Corre la Guaraca. Who knows – you might just discover your inner ninja (or your outer goose) in the process!

23. Pabitin: The Filipino Piñata Party!

Get ready for a birthday celebration like no other with Pabitin, the Filipino twist on the classic piñata! This colorful contraption, made of bamboo and adorned with vibrant tassels and flags, is a true test of timing, agility, and maybe even a little bit of luck.

The Basics:

  • A Pabitin, or “rack of goodies,” is suspended above a group of eager children
  • The rack is filled with treats, toys, and other small prizes
  • As the Pabitin is lowered and raised, kids must try to grab as many goodies as possible
  • The colourful banderitas (crepe paper decorations) add to the festive atmosphere while also providing an extra challenge for little hands

The real fun begins when the Pabitin starts moving up and down, with children jumping and reaching to snatch up their favourite treats. It’s a flurry of excitement and laughter as kids try to outsmart each other and the tricky banderitas to secure their loot.

Not only is Pabitin a beloved birthday tradition in the Philippines, but it’s also a great way to add a unique cultural twist to any celebration. So why not give this Filipino favourite a try at your next party? Just be prepared for some friendly competition and a whole lot of fun!

24. Dampa: The Filipino Rubber Band Game That’s Snapping Its Way into Hearts (and Palms)!

Are you ready to put your air-bending skills to the test and become the master of the rubber band universe? Then it’s time to dive into the world of Dampa, the traditional Filipino game that’s like a cross between Jenga, Operation, and a really intense round of “I’m not touching you!”

The Rules:

  • Assemble your squad and gather your rubber band arsenal
  • Draw a starting line and prepare to unravel faster than a celebrity’s PR team after a social media scandal
  • Take turns attempting to move an odd number of rubber bands past the finish line (because even numbers are so last season)
  • If you succeed, you keep the rubber bands and go again; if you end up with an even number, your opponent snatches the loot faster than you can say “Hala!”
  • Master techniques like “plus/minus 1, 2, 3” or “silencer” to become the Dampa GOAT (Greatest of All Time, for you non-millennials)
  • First player to run out of rubber bands treats everyone to a round of halo-halo (Filipino dessert)

But wait, there’s more! Dampa isn’t just a game – it’s a full-on workout for your arms, a test of your patience, and a crash course in air-bending mastery. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to bond with your barkada (friends) and show off your mad skills (just try not to snap any rubber bands at your opponent’s face, okay?).

25. Piggy in the Middle: The Classic Childhood Game of Keep-Away!

Ah, Piggy in the Middle – the game that’s been causing playground chaos and turning friends into temporary frenemies for generations. Also known as Keep Away, Monkey in the Middle, Pickle in a Dish, or Pickle in the Middle (because apparently, we just can’t agree on a name), this classic game is all about quick reflexes, strategic passing, and the thrill of being the piggy (or avoiding it at all costs).

The Rules:

  1. Choose one lucky player to be the “piggy in the middle” (a role that’s either a badge of honor or a dreaded curse, depending on your perspective)
  2. The other players stand on either side of the piggy, forming a human corridor of mischief
  3. The outside players pass the ball back and forth, trying to keep it away from the piggy
  4. The piggy, meanwhile, is on a mission to intercept the ball and break free from their piggy prison
  5. If the piggy manages to catch the ball, they shed their piggy status and trade places with the player who threw the ill-fated pass

Piggy in the Middle is a game that’s as versatile as it is fun. You can mix things up by playing with more than two outside players, using different types of balls (soft balls for the younger crowd, basketballs for the daring), or even turning it into a square dance of sorts. And if you really want to up the ante, you can introduce prizes for successful catches or playful punishments for errant throws.

It’s also proven to be a valuable training tool for aspiring rugby and football players. The quick passes, strategic movements, and need for rapid decision-making mimic the skills needed on the field, making it the perfect drill for honing footwork, ball placement, and offloading abilities.

26. Maria Went to Town: The Filipino Relay Race That’s Dressed to Impress!

Get ready to embrace your inner fashionista and race against the clock with Maria Went to Town, the traditional Filipino parlor game that’s equal parts obstacle course, relay race, and impromptu fashion show. This energetic game is a hit with players of all ages, but trust us – it’s even more hilarious when grown-ups get in on the action!

Here’s how to play:

  1. Divide your group into two teams of equal size (anywhere from 5 to 15 players per team)
  2. Each team selects a member to be their “Maria” (bonus points if you choose the most unlikely candidates)
  3. The “Marias” get dolled up in an array of accessories, including a bonnet or shawl, an apron or skirt, a swipe of lipstick, a bag or basket, and an umbrella (because every fashionable Maria needs to be prepared for any weather)
  4. On “go,” the “Marias” race through the designated obstacle course, strutting their stuff and trying not to lose their carefully curated ensemble
  5. Once they’ve conquered the course, the “Marias” must remove all their accessories and pass them on to the next player before tagging them in
  6. The first team to have all their players complete the relay wins bragging rights and maybe even a round of applause for their fashion prowess

The real beauty of Maria Went to Town lies in its versatility. You can use any household items as props, from feather boas to frying pans (just make sure they’re not too heavy to run with). And while the game is traditionally played with two teams, you can easily adapt it for smaller or larger groups.

There’s just something inherently entertaining about watching your friends and family members transform into frenzied fashionistas, racing against the clock and each other. Plus, with the endless possibilities for props and obstacles, no two games are ever quite the same.

27. Charades: The Game Where Silence Speaks Volumes!

Step into the spotlight and let your actions do the talking with Charades, the classic word guessing game that’s been a hit since the 18th century. In this game, players take turns acting out words or phrases without making a peep, while their teammates race to shout out the right answer.

The Basics:

  • Split into teams or play solo
  • Choose a category or let players pick their own words
  • Players take turns acting out words using gestures and facial expressions
  • Teammates guess the word before time runs out
  • The player or team with the most points wins!

To be a Charades champion, use your whole body to express ideas, commit to your gestures, and break down the word syllable by syllable if your team gets stuck.

As a guesser, shout out your wildest guesses – you never know what might be right!

28. Sardines: The Hide-and-Seek Game with a Fishy Twist!

Get ready to pack in the fun with Sardines, the hilarious variation of hide-and-seek that’ll have you and your friends squeezing into tight spaces and giggling like, well, a bunch of sardines!

Here’s how to play:

  • One brave soul goes off to find the perfect hiding spot
  • The rest of the gang counts to a predetermined number, then scatters to search high and low
  • When a player discovers the hidden person, they quietly join them in their cozy hideout
  • As more players find the hiding spot, the space gets more and more cramped (just like a can of sardines!)
  • The game ends when everyone is packed together like…you guessed it, sardines!
  • The first person to find the original hider gets to be the next sardine-in-chief

But here’s the catch (pun intended): Sardines is best played with a group of 10-20 players. Why? Because the more people you have, the more hilariously cramped the hiding spot becomes! Plus, with more players, you’ll have a bigger search party and a better chance of finding that elusive hider.

Whether you’re the first to find the hiding spot or the last to squeeze in, Sardines is guaranteed to bring out the laughter and the camaraderie in everyone.

Join me on a journey of strategy and skill with Pallanguli, the traditional South Indian game that’s been fascinating players for ages. Simple yet addictive gameplay makes Pallanguli a true classic among board games.

  • First player picks a cup and puts one counter at a time, clockwise

  • When there are no more moves, the round ends and the next player starts with their earned counters
  • The game continues until a player can’t fill any cups and the player with most counters wins!

As you plan and strategize, you’ll be exercising your memory, observation, coordination, math and motor skills. What a win-win!

And the best part? Pallanguli has many names – aliguli mane in Kannada, vamana guntalu in Telugu – so you can impress your friends with your language skills while you beat them at the game.

Here’s how to play this timeless gem:

  4. Remove a chair and keep the game going until one player reigns supreme

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Put your own spin on this childhood game with these variations:

These timeless games prove that you don’t need fancy gadgets or expensive equipment to have fun – just a little creativity, a sense of adventure and a willingness to let loose and be a kid again.

Remember, the best games are the ones that bring people together, get everyone laughing and create unforgettable memories. So don’t worry if you can’t remember all the rules of Duck, Duck, Goose or if your Red Rover line isn’t perfectly straight – the real magic happens when you’re just playing games and enjoying each other’s company.

From our playground to yours, here’s to a childhood full of laughter, friendship and endless hours of imaginative play. Because when we encourage our kids to run, jump, and explore through these classic games, we’re not just helping them stay active – we’re nurturing their curiosity, social skills and sense of joy that will serve them well long after they’ve outgrown the playground.
